Motivation is one of the vital elements to success. Does the motivation people give perform the intended task of motivating you? Or do they demotivate you instead? In many a case, the latter would be the answer. Motivation is of many types. But does it always mean the motivation we get from others? I don’t think so. As I see it, they are self-motivation and intrinsic motivation that drive the world to success. Being a significant contributor to your success and growth, self-motivation encourages you to use your strengths to achieve your goals and prevents you from depending on others. Rather than thinking of motivating people, it is the thought of creating an environment where people tend to motivate themselves that goes the farther distance and makes a difference.

When it comes to creating motivating situations, most people out there employ a reward strategy. Rewards and punishments are terms that have existed since time immemorial. Nonetheless, whether they are effective enough to push the millennials forward is a big question. When you reward someone for accomplishing a task or behaving in a way, they are most likely to miss out on the inherent rewards of the task or behavior itself. In some cases, the reward would make it less likely that people will carry out the task if they see no recompense.

I am not totally against rewards. I am stating that if people get addicted to receiving rewards, they won’t perform without them. Recognition is the best reward that anyone can get. Perhaps, it is one of the priceless & price-less rewards one could offer. Compliments, no matter how little they are, tend to boost the morale of us, Homo sapiens. Compliments may not help settle your dues, but they have almost the same effect as receiving a cash reward, studies suggest. When complimenting someone, one must not flatter nor exaggerate his accomplishment, but truly praise the work. This holds significant importance because when you overpraise someone, you provoke inside him a feeling or a fear that he might not live up to the praises.

A strong, positive self-image is the best preparation for success in life.

- Dr. Joyce Brothers

What someone needs to motivate himself is an environment that supports his sense of autonomy, an environment where there is no term such as micromanagement, and an environment that guarantees his total freedom. When you entrust someone with a job, give him freedom over his thoughts and let him carry out the same in his way. That is when ideas are born. That is when geniuses evolve.
